Vascolynna Agamo's jaw is completely fused on one side and partially on the other side, as a result of a condition that causes excess bone growth.

Ms Agamo will undergo the procedure in Brisbane’s Wesley Hospital on Saturday, with the medical staff performing the operation pro bono, and her travel and accommodation taken care of by the Rotary Club of Brisbane.

The visit to Brisbane is Ms Agamo’s second, after she was first brought here in 2003 as a three-year-old for treatment of the condition.

Maxillofacial surgeon Dr John Arvier conducted the original surgery and said her jaw re-fused because of a lack of rehabilitation facilities in PNG.

“We’re hoping to unlock the fusion between her lower jaw and the base of her skull,” Dr Arvier said.

“It’s actually re-fused in a slightly different spot than it did last time, the most common point of fusion is the jaw joint itself, which we released (in 2003).

“We put some muscle in to stop it re-fusing but it’s fused a little bit further along now.”

Dr Arvier said the operation was relatively simple but could have a massive effect on Ms Agamo’s quality of life.

“She breathes through a tube in the front of her throat and she manages to get enough food through the gap in her teeth to survive,” he said.

“All the things we take for granted, like cleaning your teeth, eating a normal diet, even vomiting, are a problem with this condition.”

Dr Arvier will provide assistance this time around to lead surgeon Dr Geoff Findlay.

The operation is expected to take a few hours, and after about two days of recovery Ms Agamo should be able to leave hospital.

While limited in her speech, she said she was very grateful for the second opportunity to live a normal life.

She brought a gift of traditional necklaces for everyone involved in the operation and the effort to make it happen in the first place.

Her father Duane Agamo made the trip with his daughter, and said the operation would make a lot of difference.

Mr Agamo said his daughter had dropped out of school in year 7, partly because of bullying from other students over her appearance.

“It was quite good for a while [after the first surgery] but then nature took its course and her jaw fused again,” Mr Agamo said.

“These last 10 years she’s been struggling, having to eat very soft food.”

He said he was incredibly humbled his daughter had been given a second chance at a new lease on life.

“Thank you so much for having my daughter back again, thank you Australia,” he said.

Greg Pearson from the Rotary Club of Brisbane (High Rise) said they had been working for two years to ensure Ms Agamo could get the surgery.

"The members felt an obligation to Vascolynna, she originally came out in 2003 under a Rotary program which she no longer qualified for," Mr Pearson said.

"So it was considered a number-one priority.

"We got wonderful support from the community, which has made it all possible."
