The man, aged in his 60s, suffered significant internal injuries when the steel struck him in the abdomen on Monday morning about 230 kilometres south of Rockhampton.
The RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service's onboard medical crew suspected the man had broken ribs and internal bleeding.
The critical care paramedic and doctor treated him on scene before he was airlifted to the Rockhampton Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The man was later transported to a Brisbane hospital for further treatment.
