Longreach hit 43.9 degrees on Saturday, while Clermont reached 41.3 degrees, recording its warmest October day since 1910.

Moranbah had a temperature of 41.4 degrees, the hottest since 1986 for this time of year and Thangool also recorded its hottest October temperature since 1928, with 38.4 degrees on Saturday.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Chris Joseph said there could be more record-breaking temperatures to come on Sunday as the heat continues to linger in Central Queensland.

"We'll probably see similar numbers in the same areas with a better chance of breaking records today or tomorrow," he said.

"There is also a severe to extreme heatwave expected in parts of central Queensland west districts and possibly the Northern Goldfields district for the next two days."

Meanwhile, Mr Joseph said south-east Queensland would see a drop in temperature on Monday following the sweltering heat.

"At the moment it's not too bad sitting between 32 to 38 degrees but tomorrow it'll be much cooler," he said.

"We're going to have strong easterly winds coming up the coast and may be pretty cloudy.

"The combination between this means we'll be seeing temperatures of about 23 to 24 degrees across the south-east.

"It's quite remarkable as the change of temperature is at least six or seven degrees cooler."

Mr Joseph said the south-east would experience one of the coolest days in October on Monday but would slowly start to rise in temperature from Tuesday onwards.

There was also no relief on the horizon for far north Queensland with temperatures in the mid 40s expected to continue.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson said crews were on scene at a bushfire burning in the Mount Surprise area of that region on Sunday.

"This fire broke out yesterday and is posing no threat to property at this time," they said.

"Firefighters are assisting land holders to monitor the blaze, which is burning within containment lines.

"The township of Mount Surprise is currently without power."

The spokesperson said Mount Surprise residents could be affected by a smoke haze throughout the day and warned motorists to drive with caution.
