The Bureau of Meteorology issued an alert for a severe thunderstorm tracking eastward towards Toowoomba just before 4pm on Sunday, and updated it to a very dangerous storm just after 5pm.

"The thunderstorm near Dalby and Tipton on the Darling Downs is now deemed to be very dangerous," the bureau tweeted.

"The storm is near stationary and likely to be producing intense rainfall and flash flooding."

The storm was predicted to hit Dalby as storms moved slowly along a convergent zone between Pittsworth and Dalby and was likely to cause flash flooding.

At 7pm the bureau updated the threat risk, saying the immediate danger of serious storms had eased but a more general thunderstorm warning remained in place for the Darling Downs west of Toowoomba.

The warning came as Brisbane city copped a drenching, with 14 millimetres of rain recorded from 9am and Amberley recording 36 millimetres.

Across the past 24 hours to 9am, Pomona on the Sunshine Coast recorded 157 millimetres and Ipswich 58 millimetres, while Mt Nebo west of Brisbane also copped 91 millimetres under heavy grey skies.

But Brisbane's wet weather was nothing compared with far north Queensland, where the remains of Tropical Cyclone Owen left a trail of damage and set rain records.

Regions between Cairns and Townsville recorded more than 500 millimetres of rain, with Halifax reporting 681 millimetres in the 24 hours to 9am Sunday morning, more than 100 millimetres of which fell in just one hour.

The Cardwell Range recorded 552 millimetres, Lucinda recorded 500 millimetres and Ingham recorded 485 millimetres. Even Townsville recorded more than 100 millimetres, setting new records for Halifax and Cardwell.

Bureau of Meteorology Queensland weather services manager Richard Wardle said the remains of the cyclone were now slightly further offshore and moving south-east, which should see the heaviest rainfalls moving out to sea.

“The heaviest falls are expected to continue easing over the next two days, however coastal communities between Mackay and the northern Wide Bay are still likely to experience heavy rain,” Dr Wardle said.

Flood watches had been reduced for far north Queensland covering Ayr to St Lawrence, with a minor flood warning in place for the lower Herbert and Bohle rivers.

"The situation is generally improving in the state's north. There are still areas of concern we are monitoring very closely," BoM hydrologist Jess Carey said.

"People from Townsville down to central Queensland need to keep up to date on the latest information and warnings as they are issued."

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said large reptiles had been spotted in the far north Queensland floodwaters.

"There are a lot of crocodiles that are being sighted at the moment so be careful on the roads and please don't go near the crocodiles," the Premier said.

Police confirmed at least one crocodile was spotted close to a woman who was rescued from floodwater on Saturday night.
