Nearly 40 per cent of officers claimed police work had a negative impact on their health and a third reported being “burnt out” and “overloaded” by work, according to the state government’s latest employee survey.

One in three officers said it was a waste of time raising internal complaints and one in four admitted they were not inspired to do their best - with a similar number confessing they were not motivated to help the Queensland Police Service achieve its objectives.

Around one-third of respondents felt an officer’s gender or age could be a “barrier to success” in their police career.

The majority of police - nearly 80 per cent - had not noticed any change in the organisation since the results of the previous employee survey in 2016, raising questions over the value of the staff consultation exercise.

Fairfax Media asked the QPS how many complaints were raised in the last year but the organisation refused to provide the figure.

Instead, in a statement, a spokesperson said the Ethical Standards Command investigated and took all complaints seriously, and had strategies in place to manage complaints and improve working conditions, such as the introduction of a new State Discipline Office and a trial of a new discipline system, which began on July 1 this year.

According to the QPS’ latest annual report, the government closed down four Police Beats and shopfronts in the last year: Brisbane's West End, Australia Fair on the Gold Coast, Newtown and South Townsville.

It also downgraded the 24-hour Yarrabah watchhouse to a holding cell facility.

The report revealed Suncorp’s annual $20,000 scholarship in 2017 was awarded to police in the QPS Financial Crime and Cyber Group.

However, Suncorp confirmed its newest recipient in 2018 would not be used to fight financial and cyber crime.

Instead, it will go to a police officer in Fortitude Valley police station for its "Beyond Bollards" study, to examine how terrorism and critical incidents impact on policing strategies in crowded places.

Meanwhile, QPS confirmed 29 people became the proud owners of used Queensland police motorbikes which they bought at auctions in the last year, and another 710 people are driving around in old police panda and fleet cars.

Police motorbikes must either be four years old or have 96,000 kilometres on the clock before being sold, while “general duties vehicles” need only have 80,000 kilometres racked up before being auctioned.
