Big-game days can attract 50,000 people to the ground and while most people now catch public transport, a significant proportion drive and park around the ground.

Some streets were being parked out until the restrictions were put in place 15 years ago.

However, businesses subsequently began to complain that the restricted parking hours during game days at Lang Park – now known as Suncorp Stadium – was hurting their trade.

There are now 40 signs around the Milton area detailing the parking restrictions and eight flashing signs telling drivers not to park in the area.

Effectively shoppers have been banned from some areas of Milton from midday on game day to organise infrastructure for large crowds at Suncorp Stadium.

Shoppers became wary of the parking restrictions in the Milton area when rugby league and rugby union games were held and shoppers shunned local shops and restaurants.

Brisbane City Council on Wednesday announced two changes to the parking and will introduce new signage in Milton to show which areas the changes affect.

The changes come into effect this week for any games this weekend.

The changes mean:

1: Parking restrictions can be “customised” to specific areas around Milton on game day and no longer operate as a blanket parking ban from midday on game day.

2: The restricted zones begin two hours before the kick-off — whether it is 2pm, 5pm or 7pm — and last for two hours after the game, or concert, at Lang Park (Suncorp Stadium)  has finished.

3: These new areas where parking is allowed will be displayed on new signs in the Milton area.

4: Signs letting residents and traders know that parking restrictions will begin, now start operating from 10pm the night before game day and no longer from the afternoon before game day.

5: While there are some "timed" parking zones within the restricted areas, any unmarked parking areas will be restricted to 15 minutes' parking.

Traders argued successfully to Brisbane City Council in March 2018 that shoppers were ignoring the area as soon as their lights began flashing and they missed valuable business.

Milton’s local councillor Peter Matic said the problem was hurting local businesses, despite improving traffic on game days.

“Feedback that I have received from the community is that the current provisions, which were created in 2003, have been successful in minimising event-traffic impacts; however, they are turning people away from visiting at other times,” Cr Matic said.

“Over the past 15 years, events have changed significantly, and many events are now held later in the day, which means that there is an opportunity to adapt parking restrictions to allow more visitors to the area throughout the rest of the day.”

Cr Matic said the change was a good step.

“It will mean that when night games are held at the stadium, the neighbourhood is not on lockdown all day, instead, only around the event,” he said.

Earlier this year more than 1500 people from local businesses signed a petition calling for changes to the parking around Suncorp Stadium.

Mary Ryan Bookstore owner Phil Concannon previously told his local paper, Westside News, the parking restrictions were destroying local businesses.

“They have devastated our businesses,’’ Mr Concannon told the paper. "Nothing like this exists around the Gabba.”
