Indie Armstrong was walking along a pedestrian crossing outside Nambour Mill Village with her sister Lily, 8, and grandmother Sandy when an 86-year-old woman driving a hatchback reversed into them.

Indie tragically died after she was transported to Nambour hospital with her 57-year-old grandmother, who remained in a critical condition.

Lily suffered leg injuries and was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

The Sunshine Coast community held a candlelight vigil on Sunday evening in the shopping centre car park to show their support for the young Yandina family.

Many residents who couldn’t make it to the vigil posted photos of candles and showed their respect online.

“My thoughts and prayers also go out to the elderly driver, I hope she understands accidents happen, this is an extremely tragic event and she will be in an unknown state at this time, may she bring herself to heal with time,” one resident wrote.

A gofundme page was set up late on Sunday evening to help raise money for Indie’s parents, who were small business owners.

“[Indie’s parents] really just need some time to grieve and get through this extremely hard and heartbreaking time ahead of them,” the page stated.

“With a funeral to organise and medical expenses for the other family members, any donations would be greatly appreciated and would allow this family the time to grieve their beautiful daughter and help with expenses during this time.”

The page raised more than $5000 by Monday morning.
