A Sunshine Coast schoolboy has been airlifted to hospital with a "serious eye injury" after a mishap with a javelin on Wednesday morning.

The teenager was carrying the javelin off the oval when the sharp end became caught in the ground causing the blunt end to flick into his eye, according to RACQ Lifeflight Rescue.

Paramedics were initially called to Sunshine Beach State High School on Ben Lexcen Drive in Sunshine Beach about 11.25am and administered first-aid before calling for a helicopter.

The patient was airlifted to Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in Brisbane by the Sunshine Coast-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter with his mother aboard.
