The 153-year-old Brisbane CBD club has been canvassing the possibility of allowing women full membership in recent months.

In an email to members, club president Stuart Fraser said the decision to hold a postal ballot of its 4800 members had the unanimous support of the committee.

"It is 12 years since members were offered the opportunity to vote on this issue," he wrote.

Mr Fraser included a link to a survey of 1634 members that showed 57 per cent of people supported expanding membership to women, with 36 per cent disagreeing.

"The results indicate the majority of members want to amend our current membership model to include the opportunity for partners, daughters, granddaughters and peers to join."

Mr Fraser said the coming weeks would "no doubt see people who feel strongly about this decision make their feelings known".

"Discussion is welcome. It should be constructive, gentlemanly and respect club rules at all times," he wrote.

"The issue of women's membership continues to be raised because it has not been resolved."

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk this week lambasted the Tattersall's Club for continuing to deny women membership.

"In a state that has a female premier, deputy premier, opposition leader and chief justice, a club that seeks to engage community leaders but bans women from being members is out of step with community sentiment," she said.

"While any vote is a matter for the club, our position is unchanged.

"My ministers will not be joining or attending the club while the current eligibility remains."

Traditionally, the Tattersall's Club, opened in 1865, has issued "honorary membership" invitations to male MPs and ministers.

Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath said she would leave the issue of memberships up to the Tattersall's Club.

"There's plenty of other clubs and great organisations that welcome women in their doors," she said.

"Women will make decisions for themselves as to what they want to do as far as membership of organisations.

"I think, ultimately, though, it is about inclusion in our community and we need to do all we can to support that inclusion and respect."

An anonymous website called "Tatts Myths" has been created to "help members navigate the various claims made to justify major structural changes and provide factual rebuttals to said claims".

The website said a proposal to change from a single-gender membership structure had been rejected by members three times, including in 2006.

The Queensland Club is also men-only, while the Brisbane Women's Club and The Lyceum Club are women-only.

The Brisbane Club opened its doors to female members 20 years ago.
