From November 1, Queenslanders were able to claim a 10¢ refund for most plastic drink containers, beer bottles and aluminium cans at one of more than 200 collection points across the state.

Bellbowrie resident Darren Montesin and his eight-year-old daughter went to cash in their first containers on Saturday but faced hurdles.

Mr Montesin said their first drop-off point at Jindalee was difficult to find and had bags stuck in the chute.

He said the information available at the point said items had to be in a specific bag but no bags were available so they drove down the road to another site.

“We had them all in black plastic garbage bags and the lady said, 'I can’t accept them, they’ve got to be in a clear plastic bag,' ” he said.

“Then you put the (printed off) label on the bag and it goes in a bigger bag with other bags. You don’t get any receipt or money on the spot.”

A Container Exchange spokeswoman said clear bags were required so the contents of the bag could be seen.

Mr Montesin said he would try to use the scheme again.

“I wouldn’t say the website is all that user-friendly,” he said.

“We will be more prepared for next time.”

There have been similar reports from a drop-off location at Newstead of it being difficult to find and containers only being accepted in clear plastic bags.

Container Exchange corporate affairs manager Glenda Viner said the company had provided all drop-off locations with signage for their front doors so people could easily identify the bag drop sites.

“Whether containers left at bag drops need to be in plastic bags is decided by individual container refund point operators,” she said.

“We can understand that stores may be concerned about contamination from drink bottles which are not bagged, as it could leak, causing problems and attracting vermin,” she said.

On Monday, Queensland Environment Minister Leeanne Enoch said 10 million containers had been returned through the scheme.

“This means more than $1 million has gone back to Queenslanders and charities,” she said.

“This is also just the beginning of the scheme, and these figures will continue to grow as more Queenslanders get on board.”
