Overnight storms lashed south-east Queensland and northern NSW, and a 65-year-old man died when a fig tree crushed his home near Byron Bay.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Chris Joseph said an upper trough was responsible for the approaching wet weather, expected to remain for the next four days in Brisbane.

"Over the next two days, there will be an increase in rain activity, not so much storms, more of a rain situation," he said.

"They will ease on Sunday as the upper trough pushes through south-east Queensland and out over the ocean."

Brisbane's maximum temperatures were not expected to rise above 22 degrees for the rest of this week, thanks to increased cloud cover and lingering cooler air under the rain clouds.

Warnings earlier in the week that a "supercell" could be bearing down on the south-east on Wednesday were off the mark in the end, Mr Joseph said.

"They were very weak cells, hardly anywhere near super, the bigger storms were up near the Wide Bay region," Mr Joseph said.

"The initial burst of rain was a surface trough that came through the western suburbs and pushed very weak cells to Brisbane about 6pm," he said.

"Another weak line of storms cells came through about 2 or 3am in the morning and that combined with the south-easterly change that came up from the NSW coast.

"The stronger cells hit the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast. There were no reports of damaging winds or hail. The maximum wind gust of 57km/h was recorded in Coolangatta at 6.40pm."

According to the BoM website, the highest rainfall totals were dumped on the Sunshine Coast area.

Tewantin and Lake Cooroibah in the Noosa region recorded 80 millimetres and 70 millimetres respectively, while Coolum West in the Sunshine Coast region received 70 millimetres.

About 1000 properties in south-east Queensland lost power on Wednesday night. Almost all connections were restored by morning.

About 10,000 properties north of Gympie also lost power and 830 were still cut off by morning.
