A path upgrade on the Goodwill Bridge was urgently investigated in October 2017, after it left cyclists skidding and with little traction when the surface was wet.

More than $23,000 was spent to fix the slippery surface, but in early 2018 it was still a hazard.

In February, yellow signs were placed on the pillars at both the QUT and South Bank side of the bridge that said “use caution and dismount when wet”.

From October 4, 2017, to August 23, 2018, the Department of Public Works received 33 complaints relating to the Goodwill Bridge, which includes written and verbal complaints.

Of these complaints, 14 included a claim for compensation.

On Tuesday, almost a year after the slippery surface was first installed, Public Works Minister Mick de Brenni said a new $545,000 surface with plenty of grip would be installed in about six weeks.

“I put my body on the line this morning to test the surface out,” he said.

“We hosed it down first so we could see how it performs in the wet and I can confirm that it’s got plenty of grip.

The surface is a product called OmniDeck and is also used on the Go Between Bridge cycleway.

It will take about six weeks or so to install, weather permitting, and the work will be done a section at a time so the bridge remains open for cyclists and pedestrians.”

Bicycle Queensland chief executive Anne Savage said the new surface was well and truly slip-resistant and safe for cyclists to use.

“The new surface is safe, water-resistant, and non-slip,” she said.

The centre path of the bridge, which is currently blue, will be painted grey with large green bicycle symbols at various intervals as part of the works.

The outer parts will be painted maroon.

The bridge will be resurfaced in sections, allowing cyclists and pedestrians to continue using the bridge throughout the process.
