After a highly successful run in Sydney, the musical will pack up its bags and move north to Queensland, bringing its irreverent, often darkly offensive take on Mormonism, religion and even theatre itself.

A teasing photo posted on The Book of Mormon official website on Monday promised that "good things will come to those who waitlist", showing a bus poster with one of Brisbane's Meriton towers in the background.

The show will begin performances at the Lyric Theatre at QPAC on March 16, 2019.

Written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, with music by Frozen composer Bobby Lopez, the show was an immediate hit on Broadway in 2011 and has since toured America.

Since then it's taken out nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and a Grammy Award for best music theatre cast album, making it one of the most successful musical shows in history.

The Australian production was nominated for a swag of Helpmann Awards and took home the awards for best musical and best direction.

Despite its irreverent take, following two Mormon missionaries as they attempt to spread the word of the Mormon faith to a fictional tribe in Uganda, the smash-hit has been recognised by even the Mormon Church itself.

The show will also make its way to Adelaide, with shows starting June 27.

Tickets go on sale on Tuesday, August 7.
