Maps were released earlier this month showing proposed changes to eligibility zones for the state's most popular public high school, set to kick in once the new high-rise school in Dutton Park opens in 2021.

State High’s current catchment stretches through South Brisbane, West End and out to Dutton Park, but would be cut by 25 per cent under the new proposals.

Residents told Fairfax Media the new proposals were crude lines on a map that “cut some streets in half” and did not show the homes affected by the proposed changes.

Eligibility for the prestigious school has been a major issue among parents in the rapidly growing South Brisbane area, amid claims some parents would lie about where they were living to enrol their child.

Linda Taemets of South Brisbane said the education department stonewalled her after she made repeated calls to find out if her property on Crown Street was in or out of catchment on the draft map.

“I tried several times to speak to someone,” she said.

“They’re not saying they won’t tell me - they just keep saying they don’t know the answer, which is ridiculous.

The consultation phase finishes on September 30.

"You can see maps on their consultation page but it doesn’t give you enough information to really know what it means, and you can’t see it in a large format," Ms Taemets said.

“I want to be able to speak to someone [from the department] who knows the answer to my simple question

“How can [they] ask the community for consultation when we don’t know what they’re doing?”

The draft map shows Crown and Clarence Streets will be split in two, with families in the western half of each street in the prestigious BSHS catchment, while those in the eastern half lose out.

“Part of my street falls into the new catchment area and part will remain in the old - but I don’t know exactly where my house sits,” Mrs Taemets said.

“It seems really unfair that people in thousands of apartments that don’t yet exist on Montague Road, that are currently just a hole in the ground, will be in the Brisbane State High School catchment area.

“But dwellings [like ours] that have been here since before the catchment even existed, might not be.”

Neighbour Steve Swanson, who has lived on the western end of Crown Street for almost 20 years, said many families chose the quiet residential area specifically for the BSHS catchment.

“One of the reasons I bought here is because it was in the catchment area - it made it more attractive for the price I was paying,” Mr Swanson said.

While his property is just in by one or two properties, he is concerned the line on the map will move after the public consultation.

“It could change at the stroke of a pen,” he said.

“They could say, we’ve re-crunched the figures and we’re going to shift the line to the top of Crown Street, which means I’d be out.

“I don’t understand why they’d cut the street in half like this. You get the feeling that they’re asking for feedback, but the job is done.”

Realtor Sam Peterffy of Harcourts Homeside said the rezoning had been a devastating revelation for homeowners who bought in the area specifically to be in the catchment of the state’s top-performing state high school.

“Not only are they upset at being kicked out of the catchment, they’re worried the value of their property will fall because of it,” she said.

“Of course the people who are already living here are worried - many of them bought here for the school.

“I feel sorry for these people. They might have young children, and bought here planning for their children’s future. Now that’s up in the air. It’s not a great situation for them.”

A spokeswoman for Education Minister Grace Grace said she could not guarantee properties currently in the catchment would remain after the public consultation.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for the department said: “This draft catchment is currently subject to community feedback. Final catchment boundaries will be subject to consideration of community feedback.”

She added that questions regarding specific addresses can be forwarded to the Building Future Schools project team at BuildingFutureSchools@qed.qld.gov.au.
