Thousands of residents have signed a petition to stop an eight-storey tower being built in a north Brisbane suburb.

The council will debate a 2258-signature petition opposing the proposed development at Sandgate Road, Nundah, in the council chamber on Tuesday.
The development application, submitted to the council in January, proposed a new mixed-use eight-storey tower with 72 units and a communal roof-top space along with tenancies for retail and food and beverage on the ground floor.
The 1315-square-metre block for the proposed development is made up of three land parcels with the site currently occupied by one- to two-storey retail tenancies.
One building on the site, the former Henry Thomas Chemist Building, was built in 1919-20 and is a local heritage listed element.
The development application proposed the demolition of a section of the heritage shop-structure and the retention of the original, symmetrical section of the existing street facade.
The petition received by the council objected to the proposed development because of concerns over the negative impact to the aesthetic and economic value to Nundah and its residents, potential impact on the Nundah community and its village lifestyle and increased numbers of units in the suburb.
The development application is still under assessment by the council, and an information request was issued by the council to the developer on March 6 which said the proposal was not supported in its current form.
“The information request asks the applicant to respond to the matters raised including heritage impacts, building height, architectural design, streetscape interface, traffic impacts, parking, air quality, amenity impacts, landscaping, unit sizes and land use mix,” a council officer said as background to the petition.
The developer is yet to respond to the information request.
The council officer said in their written response to the petitioners that they could follow the progress of the application online.
A response to the information request was due by September 6, but an extension of three months was requested.
The council allowed an extension until October 11.
The public notification for the proposed development is yet to occur, but 30 submissions have been made so far.
“I sincerely believe that an eight-story residential dwelling on the proposed site would ruin the charm of the village,” a submission from Jason Stone said
“I do realise that it was recent years of residential development that transformed Nundah from a tired daggy village into the vibrant community it is today - but I think this particular development will ruin a hidden gem in Brisbane's Northside.”
The council will continue to assess the application.
