Hailstones up to four centimetres were reported at Aspley on Sunday afternoon, while hail was also reported near Boonah, in the Scenic Rim, south-west of Brisbane, about 3pm.

Bundama in the Ipswich area recorded 56 millimetres of rain within 30 minutes while 42 millimetres of rain fell within 15 minutes at Mount Tamborine.

At 10pm, more than 500 residents in south-east Queensland were without power, according to Energex.

The bureau said a 106km/h wind gust was reported at Toowoomba about 1.20pm. A 96km/h wind gust was recorded at Gatton at 2.10pm and a 91km/h wind gust at Oakey at 1.10pm.

At 5.30pm, the bureau said while the immediate threat of severe thunderstorms across south-east Queensland had passed, there was potential for further thunderstorm development.

However, by 7.15pm, the bureau issued an update saying the south-east region would no londer be affected by severe thunderstorms.

At 6.15pm, an updated warning was issued for a supercell moving towards Gin Gin in the Bundaberg region with the threat of very large hail and destructive winds.

"Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones over the next several hours in parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Southeast Coast districts," the warning said.

"Locations which may be affected include Maryborough, Hervey Bay, Fraser Island, Biloela, Blackwater, Taroom, Monto, Rolleston, Baralaba, Calliope, Mount Morgan and Rainbow Beach."

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advised residents to move their cars under cover or away from trees, secure loose outdoor items, seek shelter and avoid driving or walking through flood waters.

Brisbane was expected to see showers and light winds throughout the week with a top of 31 on Wednesday.
