Paramedics were called to a multi-vehicle accident on the major motorway, near Underwood Road, about 4pm.

No serious injuries were reported and crews were on scene assessing drivers and passengers.

Australian Traffic Network reporter Charleton Hart said both the centre and right lanes, heading north towards Brisbane, were blocked.

"There is about a six-kilometre delay back to Ikea, those delays built quite quickly," he said.

Mr Hart said Gold Coast beachgoers returning to the city after the long weekend were contributing to extra traffic on the motorway.
