To celebrate all things Queenslander on this fine Queensland Day - also the sacred State of Origin game one day - the Australian Bureau of Statistics has compiled some key Sunshine State facts.

While surgeons may be the highest-paid Queenslanders, only one of Brisbane's ritzy riverfront suburbs made it onto the list of our best-paid workers.

Instead, mining towns topped the list of the nine regions with the highest median employee income in 2015.

ABS regional statistics assistant director Christian Hanna said mining regions tended to have the biggest pay packets across Australia.

"It is a phenomenon that we tend to see around Australia and Queensland is no different in terms of having those high median incomes where there's the mining industry," he said.

However, when it came to the top five highest-priced regions to buy a house in the state, based on median house sale prices, south-east Queensland was king:

The total employee income in Queensland rose from $127.25 billion in 2014 to $135.44 billion in 2015.

The top one per cent of earners in Queensland made 8.2 per cent of the income, lower than the Australian total of 9.4 per cent.

More than one in 10 of Queensland's workforce is employed in the health care and social assistance industry.

In terms of housing, Queensland's homes were less expensive than the Australian average.

The median sale price of houses in 2016 was $460,000 in Queensland, compared with $500,000 across Australia.

The average monthly household mortgage repayments have actually decreased in Queensland, from $1985 in 2011 to $1892 in 2016.

Meanwhile, Queensland is growing at a rate of 1.7 per cent, just above the Australian growth rate of 1.6 per cent.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk officially welcomed the 5 millionth Queenslander last month.

The median age in Queensland is 37.1 - just below the Australian median age of 37.3 - and has increased from 36.6 five years ago.

Queensland births accounted for 20 per cent of all births in Australia in 2017.
