Patient death probe

DANDENONG Hospital will investigate how a man died three hours after he sought treatment for a suspected blood clot in his leg.

Radio 3AW reported the 46-year-old man was taken to Dandenong from Hallam on Boxing Day. Southern Health has confirmed it has launched an ''internal investigation''.

A spokeswoman said Southern Health would tell the family directly of the investigation's result. The man received treatment before leaving the hospital, she said.

She said Southern Health reported the death to the coroner, who is expected to also investigate.

The incident comes after The Age reported that Victorian hospitals would cut elective surgery and extend Christmas bed closures because of a $107 million decrease in federal funding.
