New data also shows wealth is spread more evenly in the ACT than elsewhere in the country.
The Bureau of Statistics' latest breakdown of incomes by area shows the top-three suburbs in Australia, ranked by income equality, are all in Canberra: Casey and Jacka, in Gungahlin, and Wright in Molonglo.
Another two – Dunlop and Macgregor – round out the top 10 of almost 2300 suburbs ranked by their Gini coefficient, a measure of income equality. (A Gini score of 0 indicates perfect equality, while higher scores indicate greater inequality.)
The data, from 2015-16, shows the median total income of Canberra workers was $63,061, far higher than the national median of $47,692. The bureau's report excludes people who did not submit a tax return, such as most people on welfare support.
But while the capital has relatively few working poor, it also has only a small share of very-high-income earners.
Australia-wide, the "1 percenters" – those whose earnings place them at the top of the rich list – earn 9.5 per cent of all income. Yet Canberra's 1 percenters pull in only 6.4 per cent of the city's income.
The exceptions are the burghers of Reid. The top 1 per cent of income-earners there pull in almost $1 in every $5 earned in that suburb (18.9 per cent).
Another indication of Canberra's relatively even playing field is that the top 10 per cent of ACT earners collectively take in only 28.7 per cent of all income, significantly less than the national amount of 33.8 per cent.
NSW has the worst income equality in Australia, and Sydney is the capital of the haves and have-nots.
Inequality is at its greatest in Rose Bay, Vaucluse and Watsons Bay, even though the median salary there was a rather high $73,170.
The 1 percenters in Double Bay and Bellevue Hill collected a massive 25.3 per cent of all income in the area.
While Canberra's median and average incomes remain the highest in the nation by a significant margin, the bureau notes that the city "also recorded one of the slowest growth rates over the six-year period", likely due to the wage-bargaining impasses in many federal government workplaces.
