The club gave Mr Parton the free venue hire for a political fundraiser he held in late April this year, while holding the shadow portfolio for racing and gaming, a portfolio he still holds.

It is unclear why Mr Parton accepted the gift, given the Assembly's code of conduct for all MLAs demands elected politicians actively seek to avoid or prevent any conflict of interest arising between their duties as a member and their personal affairs and interests.

Mr Parton, a vocal opponent of the Barr government's efforts to ban greyhound racing in the territory, held a party fundraiser at the club in late April this year, for which the club donated as much as $300 worth of free venue hire.

He also declined to answer a series of questions as to why it was appropriate for him to accept the gift, given his shadow portfolio responsibilities included greyhound racing, and whether he sought advice from the Assembly's ethics and integrity advisor on the matter.

Mr Parton said in a statement that everyone in Canberra knew the Opposition's position on greyhound racing and that it should not come as a surprise the city was "full of individuals that want to remove this government".

"The greyhound industry, once full of Labor supporters, is one of those groups," he said.

Canberra Greyhound Racing Club president Alan Tutt said the club had obviously welcomed Mr Parton and the Opposition's support before and since the government imposed a ban on greyhound racing in the territory.

But he said the club had donated the venue hire, which he estimated may have been closer to $200, in a similar arrangement it enters into with others who hire space at the club, with venue hire free, if the club takes bar revenue from a function.

Mr Tutt said the venue was available for hire to any member of the public, though it was unclear how regularly the venue was offered to individuals or other organisations free of charge.
