The ousted prime minister has put his "very lightly lived in" multimillion dollar penthouse on Kingston Foreshore up for sale, in a move that signals he's not planning on returning to Canberra any time soon.

The luxury property, advertised by Berkely Residential on AllHomes, is expected to go for at least $2.5 million.

The Turnbulls bought the property off the plan for about $1.8 million in 2006. Mr Turnbull spent his first four months as prime minister there before moving into The Lodge in January 2016 after protracted renovations.

A "rare offering", the two-level, three-bedroom penthouse features marble bathrooms, a huge terrace with a covered outdoor kitchen, in-slab heating and polished hardwood floors.

It is described as a "very lightly lived in" with the "most sensational views over Lake Burley Griffin, East Basin and the city".

It boasts lake views from all living areas and bedrooms and is minutes from cafes and restaurants on the foreshore.

The property is open to expressions of interest until October 11.

Mr Turnbull and his wife Lucy have been holidaying in New York since his dramatic removal as prime minister in August.

The Turnbulls have been staying in their multimillion dollar condominium on the Upper West Side. Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos also owns property in the apartment complex.
