Freedom of Religion policy-making debacle

The freedom of religion and anti-discrimination political developments over the past 10 days are a disappointing way to make policies wherever one stands on the best outcomes. The period began with the government stone-walling over the release to the public of the Ruddock Review report as demanded by Kerryn Phelps, the Independent candidate for the Wentworth by-election. Then the report was leaked to the Fairfax press which published parts of it. This was followed by a rash of commentary and continued stone-walling. However, when public opinion swung firmly behind the rejection of the right of religious schools to expel gay students as allowed under existing law and the religious schools themselves, as well as leading religious leaders, protested that they had been misrepresented, suddenly the political leadership swung into action.
