In the wake of the Helsinki summit, President Donald Trump’s apparent willingness to accept assurances by Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russia did not meddle in the 2016 United States election, despite views to the contrary by America’s own intelligence agencies, evokes memories of a stark historical parallel from Australia of more than 60 years ago.
