Bureau public servants locked in an ongoing battle over a new workplace deal could sting their bosses by weaving union-endorsed hashtags and messages into tweets and Facebook posts predicting the weather.

Staff at the 1600-strong agency will vote next week on several measures ramping up pressure on the bureau by banning data entry, use of company vehicles and travel outside 8.45am and close of business among other actions.

The most potent of threats to bosses could be a staff vote on whether to add a Community and Public Sector Union-authorised hashtag or statement to website and social media updates - "including but not limited to 'tweets', Facebook posts, and online public weather forecast products".

Union members at the bureau in November began rolling strikes at times they judged would cause the most disruption to management.

Another round of industrial action starting in late February saw staff taking blocks of strike action at any time of the day or night, on top of existing work bans.

The agency has used consultants to ask its public servants why they rejected a new workplace deal, after three "no" votes including a decisive 60 per cent rejection in December.

Weather bureau staff in March stepped up strikes in their fight for a new workplace deal as bosses continued to refuse conciliation at Fair Work.

The protected action ballot is expected to run for a little over a fortnight from May 8.

CPSU deputy secretary Beth Vincent-Pietsch said its members at the weather bureau had asked for the ballot to step up efforts to resolve their long and bitter dispute.

“Thanks to sustained pressure from CPSU members, management have taken some cuts off the table but they still haven’t moved on the core issues," she said.

"It has been almost five years since BOM staff last had a pay rise and they’re not taking this attack on them, their work and their families lying down."

Ms Vincent-Pietsch said "harsh and unreasonable cuts" for frontline staff working shifts and in remote locations remained a barrier to resolution.

"All BOM workers deserve far better than this, and yet management’s only solution has been to throw money at an outside consultant while ignoring the solutions that are staring them in the face.”

Rolling strikes and other industrial action will continue while staff vote in the protected ballot.

"The message to BOM management is clear: Stop tinkering around the edges and at least match what other federal agencies have offered by taking these unacceptable cuts to existing workplace rights and conditions off the table,” Ms Vincent-Pietsch said.

The Bureau of Meteorology said it was negotiating in good faith for an enterprise agreement acceptable to staff and consistent with the government’s workplace bargaining rules.

It was regularly meeting with employees and their representatives, most recently last week, and had provided them with a revised proposal now being considered, it said.

"The bureau remains committed to reaching agreement with staff and their elected workplace representatives as soon as possible," a spokesman said.

Fair Work in March scheduled a hearing for June 15 after a conference failed to end the dispute.
