The Berejiklian government targeted roads, health and education in the region as major sources of funding.

The drive to Murrumbateman and Yass will become easier, and safer, after the NSW government committed $50 million to the upgrade of the Barton Highway. The federal government will put $100 towards the upgrade.

NSW Roads Minister Melinda Pavey said the stretch of road between Canberra and Yass had become notorious for crashes and welcomed the federal funding in addition to what the state had contributed.

Heading to the south east, more than $110 million was announced in roads funding across the Monaro.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro re-announced the $70 million Queanbeyan-Palerang roads package which would cover the duplication of Old Cooma Road, which connects Queanbeyan and Googong, and the Ellerton Drive extension.

Health was another beneficiary with Cooma Hospital given $10 million in additional funding for planned upgrades. Mr Barilaro also reconfirmed a pre-budget announcement of an ambulance station for Bungendore.

He announced the government would partner with family health organisation Tresilian to establish a family care centre in Queanbeyan.

"It is clear that our government's investment in health extends far past the boundaries of Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong and into the regions, including here in the Monaro,” Mr Barilaro said.

Despite being absent from the list of education projects released by Fairfax Media last week Mr Barilaro announced a primary school for the rapidly expanding Googong community.

“I am thrilled to announce that from today work will begin on designing a new primary school for Googong,” Mr Barilaro said.

He said the school had been identified as a key area of need by Googong residents and that with the ACT government's decision to limit the choice of schools for NSW children in Canberra it had become even more important.

However the announcement did not give any details of costs or timelines for the new school.

Labor candidate for Monaro Bryce Wilson was quick to criticise the deputy premier for "playing catch up" on a number of issues and project delays.

"This is the seventh budget [by Mr Barilaro] for our area and what has become clear is that, on the ground, promises made do not add up to actual project delivery," Mr Wilson said.

"We are told we should be happy with the projects announced, but the reality is people are genuinely frustrated by the choices being made by this government and our local member."

Other projects that received funding in the Canberra region included $7.1 million for an Active Armed Officer Training Facility in Goulburn and $30 million set aside to commence the replacement of the Princes Highway Batemans Bay Bridge.
