The student management system allows TAFE Queensland to process student enrolments, course fees, payment plans, student results and the printing of awards.
TAFE Queensland's actual spend on IT for its student management system was $5.72 million in 2017-18, above its budget of $4.32 million.
The training provider launched a new student management system in 2018 designed to be available "anywhere, any time, on any device".
The details were revealed following an answer to a question on notice by the Liberal National Party, which was tabled in the Queensland Parliament.
Differences between the budget and actual expenditure could be a result of contractual pricing changes, ad hoc maintenance requirements and associated ICT projects that impacted on operational costs, according to the government's answer.
TAFE Queensland also transitioned to Fujitsu as its ICT support provider in January 2017, which continued to produce "operational savings", according to its annual report.
LNP Training and Skills Development spokeswoman Fiona Simpson said TAFE Queensland's ICT program was "in crisis" under Labor.
"Yet again this proves Labor and IT don't mix," she said.
"Desperate intervention is needed to get TAFE Queensland back on the straight-and-narrow and do what it does best - training the next generation of Queenslanders."
Training and Skills Development Minister Shannon Fentiman said TAFE Queensland was "implementing the best in new technology to ensure our students and staff will be able to learn and work easier and more efficiently".
TAFE Queensland chief executive Mary Campbell said the new system was the largest cloud-based student management system in the southern hemisphere.
"This is ground-breaking work, with TAFE Queensland testing the platform in ways no other organisation has ever done before, and further time and effort was needed to ensure the new system was implemented successfully," she said.
"During the development of the system, more than 2 million students across 7500 courses were migrated from the three original systems into the new SMS [student management system], including all their associated records and a further 23 million historical records."
Estimates hearings revealed TAFE's hospitality expenses doubled in three years, $687,525 was spent on international travel and $230,641 on Commonwealth Games tickets, while a former chief executive received a $390,000 termination payment after leaving her role "voluntarily".
TAFE Queensland is not alone when it comes to exceeding an IT budget.
A Queensland Corrective Services IT project will cost taxpayers an extra $800,000 after it dragged on for one year longer than planned.
In October, it was revealed that taxpayers would fork out an extra $103 million for the cost of dozens of Department of Health IT projects, which increased to $634.49 million.
Two months later, a report revealed Queensland Health's multimillion-dollar project to digitise the state's hospitals was expected to require an extra $256 million.
