Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath was speaking at the release of findings from a Queensland Family and Child Commission study which surveyed the views of more than 7000 people aged four to 18.

The study found young people had an "intense desire" to be included in decisions that affected their lives, with more than one-quarter highlighting the need for leaders and decision-makers to listen to their views.

Ms D'Ath said the question of whether to lower the voting age was "a discussion we should be having across the nation".

"I've met some incredible young people who, can I say, are so much more aware, politically aware, but just aware of what is happening in their own community, in the nation, what's happening internationally, than many adults are," she said.

"I think their views count ... We will not learn if we don't listen to the next generation."

Asked whether the voting age should be lowered to 17 or 16, Ms D'Ath said she did not get to make the decision at a state level.

"It's a conversation that I think is worthy of having and I think the community would need to have a strong voice on what they think that age should be," she said.

A Senate inquiry has been investigating lowering the voting age to 16, following a private member's bill from Greens senator Jordon Steele-John.

Senator Steele-John supports making voting optional for 16 and 17-year-olds.

Regardless of whether the voting age changed, Ms D'Ath said politicians should listen to the views of young people.

The research, This Place I Call Home: The views of children and young people on growing up in Queensland, found children wanted more green spaces, more diverse sports, better public transport, more support for music and art, and they were passionate about the environment and drought.

Young people were worried about bullying and mental health issues, how to manage workloads, stress, decisions about the future, pollution and global warming.

They wanted to learn life skills, such as paying bills and taxes, working and taking care of their own health.

About 55 per cent of 13 to 18-year-olds surveyed said they could trust most people in their community.

Activities most children and young people spent time on every day were being online (67 per cent), watching TV and movies (35 per cent), doing homework and assignments (25 per cent) and doing sport or fitness activities (24 per cent).

Only 12 per cent of children reported "never" doing fitness activities and 7 per cent "never" hung out with friends.

When asked if they were able to spend enough time with parents, carers or family, more than two-thirds agreed or strongly agreed.

More than four in five said they enjoyed spending time with their parents or carers.

Many children wanted safe gathering spaces that did not necessarily have an "agenda", such as sport or an organised activity, where they could relax with friends, while many in regional areas wanted restaurants to stay open into the evening.

Children also spoke about safety, including terrorism, nuclear war, gun violence in the US and domestic violence.

The survey found 60 per cent of children were concerned or very concerned about the amount of stress in their lives caused by school workloads, competing priorities and adult expectations.

When asked if they had been bullied, 45 per cent said they had been bullied face-to-face while 30 per cent reported being bullied online.

Targeted acts of cyberbullying included creating fake accounts, threats to expose "secrets" and deliberate acts of online trolling.

Queensland Family and Child Commission principal commissioner Cheryl Vardon said children were also concerned about the mental health of peers and family.

Pets played an important role in providing support and comfort, with children saying they could tell their pets anything and received unconditional comfort when they were sad or upset.

"If I'm agro I tell my dog and she makes me laugh and I'll give her a treat. Pets sometimes know when you are upset," a participant from south-east Queensland said.

The project involved 4900 survey responses, 1300 written responses on postcards, 200 artwork submissions and 102 focus groups for 1500 young people.

There are more than 1.14 million people aged between zero and 18 years living in Queensland.
