In 2007, the $1.3 billion Eastern Busway project was designed by the then-Bligh government to build a network of busways from the University of Queensland in St Lucia out to Capalaba over 20 years.

Two sections of Ms Bligh's busway were built by 2011 to Coorparoo. The final part of the busway was to connect Capalaba and had been set to be built from 2020 to 2026.

The council has planned two routes for the first stage of Brisbane Metro along 21 kilometres of existing busways.

Metro 1 will run from the Eight Mile Plains busway to the Roma Street busway.

Metro 2 will run from the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital Busway to the University of Queensland Lakes busway.

It also flagged in April 2017 extending Brisbane Metro to Chermside, Carindale and Springwood.

Now there are plans to link the two projects to get better buses services in the bayside.

Last month, Capalaba Labor MP Don Brown and Redlands mayor Karen Williams called for the Eastern Busway project to be revisited by e-petitioning the Queensland government to complete a new business plan, based on the likely success of Brisbane City Council's Metro service.

The e-petition had 622 signatures on Monday evening.

Brisbane deputy mayor Adrian Schrinner said he would like to see the metro eventually extend beyond the council boundary into Redland City Council.

"We are calling on the state government to prepare a business case for an extension of the Eastern Busway project so that the Metro can be extended out further to Carindale and eventually out to Capalaba," he said.

"That would be a win not only for Brisbane, but for Redlands as well."

Cr Shrinner said Brisbane always planned to extend its Brisbane Metro articulated bus service beyond the first two routes.

The first two Brisbane Metro routes would use 60 vehicles, however Cr Shrinner said the new Rochedale holding yard had the capacity to hold 90 articulated buses.

"We have planned metro so that the first two lines proposed are just the first two lines of potentially many metro lines in the future and there is certainly room in the future for up to 90 vehicles in the future," he said.

Cr Williams sees a new funding model where all three levels of government contribute funds to get more buses in the eastern suburbs.

"The first step is building the actual busway," she said.

"The busway isn't even on the agenda yet. It's only Transit-way works ($75 million in roadworks to make Old Cleveland Road more bus-friendly) that are being considered.

"Whatever we do, we need to make (Old Cleveland Road) 'metro-ready' and future-proof it."

Cr Williams proposed the metro-ready busway would be built under the revamped Eastern Busway project with federal and state funding.

Extending the Brisbane Metro, the additional buses and services would be provided by future Redland and Brisbane councils and, possibly, Translink.

"All we are asking them to do is prepare the business case to assess this so we can talk to Infrastructure Australia and the federal government," Cr Williams said.

"As long as it is planned properly it can run on existing road networks, as long as they planned for a metro."

Queensland’s population statistics show Redland City had 151,984 residents in 2016, while Brisbane’s eastern suburbs would grow from 219,000 to 271,555 by 2035.

"Redland City itself will grow from 150,000 to around 188,000," Cr Williams said.

Mr Brown said the petition asked for the business case for the Eastern Busway to be transferred to Building Queensland by 2019.

"(Cr Schrinner) said stage two of the Brisbane Metro project would get to Carindale before the Eastern Busway, so that gives us a few years," he said.

"We are just calling for some funding for a business case for the project to be considered next year and for Building Queensland to become involved by 2019."

In the short-term, Old Cleveland Road would have improvements made to improve bus flow, as part of a $75 million Northern and Eastern Transit-ways project announced during the 2017 election.

Those improvements start from Cavendish Road and end at Creek Road, this term, Mr Brown said.

"But we need to look further ahead than that," Mr Brown said.
