The Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital Foundation reported car parking revenue of $1.81 million in 2017-18 - a 9 per cent increase on the previous year.

It was among several foundations to report increased car parking revenue last year.

LNP deputy leader Tim Mander said hospital car parking costs were a "real issue" for patients and families.

"Parents and relatives already have the anguish of looking after their loved ones in hospital," he said.

"And now they've got the added anxiety of whether they can afford the car parking fees."

When asked what the LNP would do about car parking costs at hospitals, Mr Mander said: "What we need to do is renegotiate contracts with private providers."

"[And] we need to provide extra competition and extra spaces, we need to see some sort of action happening, which we're not seeing at the moment from this government," he said.

Mr Mander said building more car parks was among the solutions that should be considered.

"But I think one of the issues at the moment is there's no competition, there's a monopoly in some of these private providers, therefore they can charge what they want," he said.

"That's simply not good enough."

Casual parking for one day at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital costs between $27 and $39 at its three car parks, an increase of $1 on last year.

The Herston hospital foundation receives a share of income from the operation of privately operated car parks.

The Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, which operates the Cairns Hospital car park; the Ipswich Hospital Foundation; and the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation also reported increased revenue from car parking.

On social media, one man said he had "no option but to pump hundreds of dollars" into hospital car parking when his father was dying of cancer, while another said he spent $150 in parking fees over three days while his wife was in the cardiac ward.

Justine Christerson, who helps rural, regional and remote patients and families who need to travel to Brisbane through her Facebook page Breaking Down the Barriers - Rural Patient Support in City Hospitals, said hospital car parking costs caused a financial strain for many people.

"I know a lot of people who have had to reschedule their appointment just based on the fact they didn't have any access to funding," she said.

Earlier, a Queensland Health spokeswoman said for every dollar of car parking revenue earned, each hospital foundation gave up to $5 back to the hospital.

In October 2017, the Queensland government announced a $7.5 million scheme over four years to make an extra 100,000 free or discounted car parking concessions available at public hospitals.

Some hospital foundations operate their car parks, while others receive a contribution from commercial operators engaged to manage the facilities.
