The LNP candidate for Longman, a former Queensland state MP, has come under fire for claiming  in his state parliamentary biography that he had received the Australian service medal, rather than the Australian defence medal.

During the first day of hearings, clerk Neil Laurie confirmed biographical details for the Parliament's website were sent back to MPs for approval before they were published online.

Mr Laurie said MPs were asked to fill out a form to submit their biographical information.

"That then goes back to the member for checking prior to its insertion on the website," he said.

"We don't publish anything until we send it back to the member ... and they sign off on it."

Manager of opposition business Jarrod Bleijie critised the question, which came from Labor's Nikki Boyd.

"Worried about the polls are you? Worried about Longman on Saturday?" Mr Bleijie interjected.

Mr Ruthenberg will contest the byelection in Longman against Labor's Susan Lamb, who sparked the contest after resigning over her citizenship, on Saturday.

Meanwhile, it has been revealed that Speaker Curtis Pitt will spend more on overseas travel this year than former speaker Peter Wellington did during the previous term of government.

Mr Pitt attended a conference in New Zealand and intends to attend the National Conference of State Legislatures in Los Angeles, with his spouse, at a total cost of $31,415.

He defended the trip.

"It has not been uncommon for representatives from other parliaments, legislatures in Australia, other states and territories to attend this, and they found the experience invaluable," Mr Pitt said.

"I think it is to the benefit to all members of this house to ensure that this Parliament is as cutting edge as possible."

Mr Wellington went on one international trip, to Tonga in July 2016, at a cost of $11,767.

Answers to questions on notice, tabled during estimates, also revealed there were eight security incidents within the parliamentary precinct in 2017-18 requiring police attendance.

There were also 100 visitors, students and contractors forced to surrender items to Parliament's security officers, including scissors and pocket knives.

Last year, there were 46 incidents reported from MPs' electorate offices, of which 23 were referred to the Queensland Fixated Threat Assessment Centre for further investigation.

There will be security upgrades at the Queensland Parliament, including a $1.5 million CCTV system upgrade and modernisation program, while an electorate office security working group was established in 2016.
