Mount Jim Crow has returned to its Indigenous name, Baga, and Mount Wheeler is now Gai-i, pronounced "guy-ee".

Some believe Mount Wheeler was named after a police officer responsible for the massacre of Indigenous people, while Jim Crow possibly refers to US racial segregation laws.

The name changes for the mountains, near Rockhampton, were officially gazetted on Friday.

Member for Keppel Brittany Lauga, who supported moves to return the mountains to their traditional names, said she was incredibly pleased with the move.

"Renaming official places, which were named after colonisation, back to their traditional names - their Aboriginal names - is, in my opinion, the right thing to do and a step in the right direction towards reconciliation," she said.

"I am proud to have worked side by side with our local Darumbal elders to help have these landmarks renamed."

Ms Lauga said Gai-i and the surrounding area, named Gawula, was an important meeting place, a place for fishing and hunting, but also the place of sorry business.

"Hundreds, possibly thousands ... of Aboriginal people were massacred at Gawula and around the district in the 1800s," she said.

"I grieved for the Aboriginal people who were murdered there and I felt ashamed that our community does not speak more about the atrocities that occurred.

"For that, I am deeply sorry. To truly reach reconciliation we must be honest about our past - about our sad history."

The two mountains are sacred to the Darumbal people.

The Dreaming story for the creation of the two mountains tells of a young man and woman who fell in love, but they were too culturally related to marry and the elders forbade the relationship.

The couple, defying the elders, ran away to be together, however the Rainbow Serpent came between them, pushing them apart, creating two mountains.

The story is a reminder about the importance of showing respect and obeying elders and the lore.

There were also five waterways near Murrigal, about 30km north of Cardwell, named to reflect Indigenous Girramay culture on Friday.

These were Bulara Crossing, Dugurlaba Crossing, Jayambula Crossing, Jubun Guralugul Crossing and Ralngu Ralngu Creek.

Bulara means "night fire" or "candle vine", Dugurlaba means "rope tree" or "thin-leaved Coondoo", Jayambula means "where two rivers meet", while Jubun Guralugul means "arm coming out from the Jubun story place".

Ralngu Ralngu Creek makes official a name which has been in common use for generations.

Doolong Creek, in the Gympie area, also got a new name on Friday, with the Butchulla language word meaning "white clay".

Last year, racist place names in Queensland, such as Niggers Bounce, Mount Nigger, Nigger Head and Nigger Creek, were wiped from the map following community concern.

Other Queensland place names still reflect a violent history, including Murdering Creek, Skull Hole and The Leap.
