The Odour Abatement Taskforce, which has been nicknamed #odourbusters by the state government, will operate from a base at Redbank Plains to crack down on offensive odours and other environmental concerns in Swanbank and surrounding suburbs over the next 12 months.

People living in suburbs such as Ripley and Swanbank have complained about bad smells for years, which some saying it gets worse over summer.

In April, the government launched a survey asking residents to report the types of bad smells they were experiencing and when and where they were occurring.

Environment Minister Leeanne Enoch said the government invested $2.5 million in the program to respond to significant community concerns raised during the survey.

"With the information received from 1435 local residents, we have moved swiftly to establish a taskforce of 10 specialist environmental officers who will hit the ground from today," she said.

"The team will be dedicated to investigating and responding to issues raised by the community."

The community survey addressed waste management, air quality and water management issues within the Swanbank industrial area.

Part of the response will include introducing new technologies to monitor air, noise and water quality in Ipswich.

In addition to on-the-ground investigations, the taskforce will review current industry regulation and practice.

Member for Bundamba Jo-Ann Miller said it was pleasing to have a dedicated taskforce to tackle the issue.

During the past year, the Environment and Science Department has received 302 reports of odour from 167 people alleging bad smells from landfill and waste recycling facilities in the Swanbank industrial area.

Over the past year, the state's environmental regulator carried out more than 7250 compliance checks across Queensland, with 855 of those in the Ipswich area.
