Tasmanian tourist Justine Barwick and Melbourne schoolgirl Hannah Papps were both airlifted to hospital after being mauled by sharks within 24 hours in separate incidents off Cid Harbour last week.

Katter's Australian Party Queensland leader Robbie Katter said media coverage of the shark bites had spread globally and damaged the Whitsundays' reputation.

"We are starting to see reports that yacht charter and dive operators are seeing a major drop in forward bookings directly as a result of the shark attack coverage," he said.

"If that flows through into other tourism sectors, that means the loss of big dollars in the north as they head into one of their important tourism periods."

The minor party wants the state government to consider emergency funding and a boost to tourism promotion in north Queensland to mitigate any impacts on the summer holiday season.

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said her thoughts were with the two people injured at Cid Harbour.

"Thousands of tourists flock to the Whitsundays every year because they know it's one of the most picturesque destinations on the planet," she said.

"I'm advised the Department of Fisheries is working closely with locals to manage the situation."

Baited drum lines set at Cid Harbour on September 21 have captured six sharks, which have been euthanised.

The number of sharks caught by Queensland's drum lines and nets has reached record lows, according to government open data.

There were 911 sharks caught in Queensland waters in 1995-96 as part of the shark control program and 489 sharks caught in 2016-17.

In 2017, there were 510 sharks captured.

There were also 132 "non-target" species caught in Queensland waters in 2017, including bottlenosed dolphins, a crocodile, six green turtles, eight humpback whales, 13 loggerhead turtles and rays.

Last financial year, there were 231 sharks, turtles, rays and fish captured in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park alone.

Of those, 172 of the animals were dead, 42 were euthanised and 17 were released alive.

About one in three of the animals which died on the Great Barrier Reef were considered not dangerous, including 10 blacktip reef whalers, one scalloped hammerhead and one green turtle.

Tiger sharks were the most common species caught, with 38 dead and 37 euthanised in the Great Barrier Reef area last financial year.

Environmentalists have criticised the use of baited drum lines, which they argued indiscriminately caught and killed marine life.

In March, Australian Marine Conservation Society spokeswoman Ingrid Neilson said it was woeful threatened and endangered sharks were being killed as part of Queensland's shark control program.

"The fact is that we are just not part of a shark's diet," she said earlier this year.

"Hundreds of millions of people go swimming around the world every day of the year and sharks kill an average of 10 people each year. Almost 300 people drowned in Australia alone last year."

A Fisheries Queensland spokesman said the government would not compromise human safety and continued to support the shark cotrol program with its combination of nets and drum lines at 85 of the state's most popular beaches.

"Since the shark control program started in 1962, there has been just one shark fatality at a shark control beach in Queensland," he said.

"Based on the evidence to date, traditional capture methods remain the most effective measures to reduce the risk of shark attack."

The spokesman said Fisheries Queensland would continue to monitor the progress of alternative shark deterrent technology trials in New South Wales.

He said the Queensland program used measures to reduce the capture of non-target species, such as using drum lines where possible and bait that did not attract dolphins and turtles.

In mid-2018, the blacktip reef whaler, Galapagos whaler, school shark, thresher shark, pelagic thresher shark, bigeye thresher shark and whitetip reef shark were removed from the Queensland shark control program's list of target species.
