That’s what the sign behind James Merlino read as the State Labor government’s avenger-in-chief tried to put a wrecking ball through Matthew Guys’s political reputation on Tuesday morning.

But the 80,000 page dirt file on the Ventnor planning scandal, finally released by Labor on Monday, won’t bring the Opposition Leader’s career crashing to the ground, and Merlino knows it.

This is more about doing a bit of structural damage to Guy’s pitch to become Premier of the State.

The release of the documents by Labor has seriously trashed the gentleman's agreement that previous governments' cabinet papers are off-limits in the search for political dirt.

It’s pretty tough politics, nasty you might even say.

But Labor and the Coalition in Victoria have been engaged in a kind of an arms race in the past couple of years with all sorts of Parliamentary conventions thrown out as each side has progressively upped the ante when it comes to the rough stuff.

So there is real bad blood over what’s happened in the past couple of years and don’t underestimate the fury in Labor over the arrests of their former campaign workers after Matthew Guy called in police, again, over the ‘red shirts affair’.

But what’s really going on here is tactical. As the November 24 election approaches, the Coalition is spending time and money to convince the electorate that Premier Daniel Andrews is shifty and that Labor is dodgy. The Opposition has a lot of material to draw upon.

So now we see the latest salvo in Labor’s counter-attack, painting Matthew Guy as untrustworthy.

And Guy’s conduct back in the day when he was Planning Minister isn’t helping his cause.

It’s all too common for a minister to save their political hide by splashing a lot of other people’s money, but it’s very rare for a politician to be so starkly exposed doing it, as Guy has been by the Ventnor files.

Now Merlino says Guy should resign (not going to happen), that he should pay back the $3.5 million taxpayers forked out to make Ventnor go away (see above) and that he might be in trouble with the criminal law (a stretch).

But it’s all one more thing to worry about for Guy, a bloke who doesn’t need any more dramas as he approaches the biggest day in his professional life.

Labor knows the Ventnor revelations won’t deal a knock-out blow to Guy.

Just like the Liberals and their chipping away at Daniel Andrews, it’s more what you’d call a demolition in progress.
