The Greens still hope to achieve balance-of-power status after Saturday's state election, but conceded on Friday that Labor's onslaught against them had been damaging, while accusing the ALP of a dirty "smear campaign".

Daniel Andrews’ Labor government is in a strong position to be re-elected over the Matthew Guy-led Liberal-National Coalition on Saturday.

But the five inner-city seats being bitterly contested by Labor and the Greens could be vital to the election result, with the women’s vote crucial to both sides’ hopes of success.

Just 6.7 per cent of female respondents to a UComms/ReachTel poll for The Age intended to vote Green on Saturday, down from 12.1 per cent in October, after a campaign derailed by scandals, dumped candidates and attacks by Labor over the Greens' internal culture and treatment of women.

The poll of 1239 voters was taken on Wednesday evening, before the rape allegation against Greens candidate Dominic Phillips dealt his party’s campaign another body blow.

Comment has been sought from Mr Phillips.

The allegation, by a woman who wishes to remain anonymous, was sent to the Greens on Thursday, but has not been referred to the police.

The Greens said on Friday they had been targeted by “one of the dirtiest smear campaigns we’ve seen in a generation” and pointed out that the small numbers of Greens voters in the statewide poll increased the likelihood of error.

Privately, Greens insiders concede the damage done by revelations of misogynist behaviour by candidates and staff has been difficult to contain.

The Greens' base would not change their vote over the issue, a party source said, but some swinging voters might baulk at going Green.

Labor planners are confident their campaign has cost the Greens female votes in outer suburban electorates where support for the minor party tends to be “brittle”.

But the ALP insiders, who also believe their party’s attacks are hitting home with women in their 30s and 40s but not those in their 20s, concede that they do not know what effect the campaign will have in the contested inner-city seats.

“That’s one of the things we’ll find out about on Saturday night,” the ALP strategist said.

The Greens came out swinging on Friday, with party leader Samantha Ratnam accusing her Labor opponents of grubby politics.

“Now that the Labor Party see us as a genuine threat, they’re fighting us the only way they know how: by running one of the dirtiest smear campaigns we’ve seen in a generation," Ms Ratnam said.

“From fake how-to-vote cards, to unauthorised online ads smearing the first female Aboriginal woman in the Victorian Parliament, to trawling through personal social media and crucifying people in the media for pages they ‘liked’ on Facebook a decade ago – this was an unprecedented, well-resourced smear campaign backed by huge money.

“Do we expect that kind of campaigning to have an impact? Of course.

"But are we alarmed by a poll in which 30 fewer women say they’d vote Greens than last time? Absolutely not."

Several twentysomething voters in the marginal seat of Brunswick, where a close contest between the two parties is expected, told The Age they were unfazed by the revelations and accusations against the Greens and had no intention of switching their support.

“It doesn’t change the party's stance on the big issues that are important,” 24-year-old Molly Price said on Friday.

“Also they made the candidate step down.

“Not to say that [alleged] rape isn’t important.

“But I think it’s a separate issue. I feel like misogyny is rife across all the parties and we need to do something about that across the whole political spectrum

“But I still want action on climate change, refugees back home ... and in my mind only the Greens will properly push that.”

Health Minister Jill Hennessy said the Greens have a "toxic cultural issue when it comes to women" and claimed that their poor showing in the recent polling "has everything to do with the Greens and nothing to do with Labor”.

“It’s difficult to fix this culture when the Greens blame everyone but themselves for it," she said.

"I expected better from the Greens leader, who I thought knew that bad attitudes towards women lead to bad outcomes for women.”
