The 24-year-old will be put through his paces in an intense training session on Wednesday alongside veteran Brett Deledio (calf) and mature-age recruit Daniel Lloyd (knee), with the trio all expected to return in the next few weeks.

Greene hasn't played since the round-five draw against St Kilda after a recurrence of the frustrating toe injury that he battled throughout preseason.

That injury progressed to aggravated sesamoid bones under his big toe and ultimately nerve pain across the top of his foot, but the 2016 Kevin Sheedy medalist rejoined training last week and had another strong session on Saturday while his teammates were in Perth preparing for the West Coast game.

GWS coach Leon Cameron and his staff won't make a decision on Greene, Deledio or Lloyd until Thursday, but he was mindful of not rushing all three players back at the same time and will likely ease at least two players back through the reserves.

"That'd be a consideration whether you bring one in, whether you bring two in, they've got to get through tomorrow's training session," Cameron said.

"We feel as though they've 'rehabbed' really well and they've probably had a really good month of running and doing a number of other things in there.

"It's going to be an interesting training session tomorrow afternoon and if we all get through, fingers crossed, we've got some good selection issues to thrash out."

Deledio started the year strongly playing in the first six games and threatening to recapture the form that earned him two Richmond best-and-fairest awards, but went down with another calf injury 10 weeks ago.

Greene, meanwhile, has managed just three matches this year and has left a gaping hole in the Giants' forward line, which is also missing Jeremy Cameron (suspension) and Jonathon Patton (knee).

"We've got to be really careful when he does start coming back into the team, he has had a limited prep, we all know that, it hasn't run as smoothly as we all wanted it to," Cameron said.

"Having him up and running obviously would be massive for us but we've also got to be mindful whether he comes back this week or next week or straight into the AFL or via the NEAFL, it's going to take him a couple of weeks to get rolling and we've got to be patient with that.

"When he does get rolling, he's obviously a very, very good player and we are a better team when he is in the side."

GWS will play Richmond at Spotless Stadium on Saturday for the first time since losing last year's preliminary final to the eventual premiers.

The Giants sit half a game outside the eight following the weekend's loss to West Coast, while Richmond is a game clear on top and looking well placed to defend their title.

"They play a certain way and I think everyone talks about their pressure, which is outstanding, but they do a lot of other things really well," Cameron said.

"The pressure up the ground helps that but their back seven are very good at just stopping the opposition from scoring, full-stop.

"They're tough, they're hard and they do a lot right and they sit on top of the ladder for that reason. We can't sway too far and try to play a different way just because you're playing Richmond because it normally comes unstuck."
