The Giants will be playing for pride when they take on Geelong in the final game of the regular season, but there's no shortage of motivation for former ACT Meteor Hicks.

The 22-year-old has played just three games so far this season after being in and out of the side, but kicked her first goal of the year against the Adelaide Crows last week.

She says the challenge has been trying to avoid getting bogged down in pre-game detail and backing herself to make the right decisions under pressure.

"I'm not playing my natural game out there and if you can't play on instinct, what's the point of being out there? That's the process I'm going through at the moment," Hicks said.

"I've talked to the coaching staff about how I can improve the way I play and try to play the way that I'm training. It's still a work in progress.

"At least I have something to work on. You've got to remember why you were selected and play with your instincts, and stay within the game plan, then you'll play well. But right now I'm not getting that balance right.

"I think my performance was a lot better last week [against Adelaide], so I was happy about that but still disappointed we lost."

The Giants have won just one of their six games this year and need a strong performance against Geelong to avoid falling to the bottom of the ladder if Collingwood wins its game.

Coach Alan McConnell will name his side on Thursday before a final training session at Manuka Oval, with former Canberra United captain Ellie Brush a certain starter for the capital contest.

Hicks, a former Belconnen Magpies player, was hopeful she would get her chance to play back to back games for the first time this year, which has seen her rotate between the forward line and the midfield.

She is averaging 6.7 disposals and four tackles per game, but wants to increase her impact to impress the coaches before the off-season begins.

It will finish another busy AFLW and Big Bash season for Hicks, who has been juggling Australian football and cricket duties since she was a teenager.

She started the season thinking her sole focus would be the Giants after she was overlooked for a Big Bash contract. But the Sydney Sixers came knocking and added her to their roster, taking her on a ride to being the substitute player for the grand final.

It meant Hicks had to juggle both sporting demands, but she has been leaning on Sixers teammate and dual international Ellyse Perry for advice.

"I got the call halfway through the Sixers season, but the Big Bash finished just before the AFLW season started," Hicks said.

"There is a bit of a crossover for the AFL pre-season ... but you're not really colliding with training sessions. I was a bit disappointed when I first missed out with the Sixers, but was pretty happy when they asked me to come back.

"I'm still really keen to do both. I feel like I'm still at a level to do both, I've spoken to Ellyse and she thinks I can still do it. She's probably the best mentor I've had, so whatever she says I'll take on board."
