The Demons will open the redeveloped Phillip Oval when they host the Sydney Swans Reserves in the NEAFL on Saturday.

The Demons sit second on the NEAFL ladder heading into the final month of the regular season and could earn hosting rights during the finals, which would force the club to pick between Manuka Oval and Phillip Oval.

Player-coach Kade Klemke is refusing to get ahead of himself given the Demons face three finals-bound sides to round out the regular season but the club has begun discussions about potential finals destinations.

Klemke has conceded the Canberra outfit never felt at home at Manuka Oval, saying government officials would watch ask the team to move off certain patches of grass after a few minutes.

Now they have access to Phillip Oval for three training sessions per week and the club has shifted home games to the $6.2 million venue.

"It’s been good, we’re really happy... It’s nice to be in the actual facilities and make it feel like home. We’re putting up our logos and it’s going to really feel like our home," Klemke said.

"That’s been our big thing, we want a place the boys can feel comfortable in and not feel like we’re trespassing on someone’s house or anything like that. Phillip is going to do that for us.

"We’ve been going around to different grounds. To have something you can call home [is vital], especially in this competition, you’ve got to have some really good facilities.

"Manuka is probably still the better facility but we’re really happy to have a facility like this. It’s been great to have access to upstairs as well, we can have after match functions, our supporters can hang around, they can watch the footy up there, we can open the bar up, using the sound system.

"Doing little things like that will hopefully help out the footy club."

Manuka Oval looms as the club's preferred destination for any home finals - including a potential grand final - however Phillip Oval makes financial sense for the Demons.

Klemke is refusing to look any further than a clash with the fourth-placed Swans in the hope Canberra can celebrate the 50 NEAFL game milestones set to be achieved by Sam Martyn, Tom Faul and Ben Fulford in style.

"It puts us in a position that if our percentage is good, we only have to win one out of our next two games to get a home final," Klemke said.

"Not that we’re thinking that far ahead, we just want to win this weekend. For us, if we win, it’s four games against AFL sides which would make us the second club ever to do that in a season.

"We’ve got a fair crowd that’s going to be there with the opening of the venue. This will be an exciting time, it won’t take much for us to get up for the game."

Meanwhile, Canberra will host the under 12 national Australian rules championships beginning on Sunday and running through until next Saturday, with 180 players from eight states and territories competing.
