More than 12000 fans flooded through the turnstiles for 10 Capitals home games at the National Convention Centre and AIS Arena to give the club the WNBL's third-highest average attendance.

The Capitals have more than doubled their figures from an at times forgettable 2017-18 campaign as they prepare to end an eight-year finals exile.

Those numbers could be blown out in the playoffs with the Capitals in line to host up to four matches at the near-5000 capacity AIS Arena.

They will end their finals drought against the Perth Lynx in the first semi-final at the AIS Arena on Friday night in a clash set to revive memories of the club's golden era.

"The peak in this season’s attendance echoes the Capitals' glory days with a league-leading seven WNBL championship titles," Capitals general manager and former championship-winner Lucille Bailie said.

"This season, we went in with a fresh outlook and an unbelievably talented team which went from strength to strength. With the new approach came a flood of support from the Canberra community which has taken the Capitals to new heights.

"We know Canberra loves a winning team and we know that come finals time, people come out to be part of a special experience.

"Winning championships in front of 5000 fans at the AIS Arena in 2002 and 2003 was something special - personally, for the team and for the community - and we’re well down that path again now.

"We have witnessed unprecedented interest from Canberra and we don’t doubt the community will turn up to support Canberra’s most successful national sporting team."

The Capitals' first semi-final clash kicks off a bumper two days of basketball at the AIS Arena with the Illawarra Hawks hosting the Cairns Taipans in an NBL showdown on Saturday.
