It is perfectly fitting - so often she knocked down shots for Bendigo and heard teammates Sara Blicavs and Tessa Lavey bellow "two points for Gryffindor", or Griffin-door. If the Canberra Capitals followed suit, the Hogwarts house would rake in 19 points per night.

Griffin will look to continue her stunning season when Canberra host the Adelaide Lightning in game one of the WNBL grand final series at the AIS Arena on Saturday night.

A move to Canberra wasn't always on the cards - Griffin's path towards Capitals co-captaincy was paved after a huge player and management make-over left her feeling out of place in Bendigo.

"It really didn’t seem like my team anymore," Griffin said.

"The organisation had switched hands. The club I had been fighting for, and fighting to keep alive, was in a better place in the sense there was definitely stability, but it was also really new.

"That gave me the freedom to know I helped the club to get to somewhere it would be stable, but it was also time to move on."

The prospect of joining the Capitals crept into Griffin's mind when she was undergoing rehabilitation on a hamstring injury almost two years ago, long before her stint at the AIS inspired her to a Commonwealth Games gold medal.

Bendigo reignited her career, and Canberra could save it.

"I knew I had been stretching myself a bit too thin in Bendigo so when I came here knowing as an Opal I had access to the AIS, that was definitely part of the reason," Griffin said.

"Also the fact they recruited Erin, my wife, harder than they recruited me also spoke to the kind of club they were as far as caring about the athlete as a whole, not just their performance on the court.

"The fact they were willing to provide all the services I would need outside of being on the court, as well as a lifestyle off the court that would be comfortable and made my wife happy. It seemed like a no-brainer to come up here.

Griffin took a leap of faith to join Canberra, who boasted just one player at the time in emerging centre Lauren Scherf. The two-time championship-winning Opals star was just what coach Paul Goriss needed to attract a superstar roster.

Fast forward 11 months since Griffin put pen to paper and the Capitals are on the cusp of an unprecedented eighth championship.

"It’s not until I get questions about it and I really have to think about it, that it actually sinks in that it is a grand final," Griffin said.

"What has been special about this group is we really don’t get ahead of ourselves. I know there is only potentially only two or three games left in the season but we’ve still kept that vibe heading into the finals.

"When you sit back and think about it, you definitely do get the butterflies in the stomach."

They arguably boast the league's most star-studded squad but there is a good chance Canberra wouldn't be running into the grand final series on the back of an 11-game winning streak without Griffin.

She was named in the WNBL team of the week a staggering 11 times to put herself in the box seat for the league's most valuable player award. Griffin leads the competition in rebounds (11.7) and sits second for points per game (18.96) for good measure.

"The reason I came here wasn’t to win an MVP, it was to compete and win a championship, so hopefully that’s the box I’ll be ticking this season," Griffin said.
