A surgeon's report has confirmed Griffin suffered a 10-11 centimetre tear in her hamstring during the Four Nations tournament that will rule the Canberra Capitals recruit out for up to two months.

The American-born star Griffin is set to spend at least six weeks out of action - but the injury lay-off will not keep her out of what will likely be her final chance to play in a World Cup.

Capitals coach and Opals assistant Paul Goriss says the 31-year-old will be fit for the Opals' World Cup tilt and he will have no doubts about her ability to perform should she make the cut.

The Capitals are walking wounded with Griffin preparing to re-enter the AIS rehabilitation centre, as Marianna Tolo and Kirsty Wallace continue their comebacks for major knee injuries.

Tolo is due back in November following her second anterior cruciate ligament tear while Wallace is eyeing a return in January following a knee reconstruction.

"She’ll be alright to go for the start of the season, most definitely, but for now it’s just spending the six to eight weeks of rehab and she’ll be back in Canberra doing that," Goriss said.

"I just pushed her out the [rehab] door to go to China for Opals, fit and ready to go, and then they’ll open the door back again. She pushes herself so hard, she’s done all the right things with the rehab with her ankle.

"It’s a small setback but in six to eight weeks she is back on court and get ready to go. Huge sigh of relief knowing that, obviously [because] Tolo and Wallace will miss the front part of the season.

"Kristy is progressing well, so knowing we will have Kelsey for the start of the season is definitely a huge gain for us and we’ll plan around that moving forward."

It makes Canberra's recruitment of Hannah Young - a sterling defender that will swing between small forward and power forward - all the more important.

Her father Lewis played for the world famous Harlem Globetrotters and she grew up duelling with NBA rookie of the year Simmons in a Newcastle driveway.

Goriss has had two cracks at luring the former Virginia Tech star to Canberra and he is glad he never gave up on Young, who has been plying her trade for the Newcastle Hunters in the Waratah Championship League since returning from the United States.

"Hannah is someone I spoke to when she first graduated and she wasn’t ready to come back home to Australia. We went the second time around and got her the second time," Goriss said.

"I spent a weekend in Sydney watching her play and she’s a great defender that can defend across multiple positions. She’ll add some perimeter firepower to us but she has also got some defensive grunt that is going to help us on the perimeter."

The Capitals will soon unveil an international recruit which could be Canberra's lone import as Goriss edges closer to completing his roster.
