That's the message from Canberra Capitals star Kia Nurse after she backed the WNBA Players Association's move to opt out of its collective bargaining agreement with the WNBA.

The Capitals and New York Liberty guard has taken to social media to endorse the players association's stance in a bid to strike a deal better reflecting the potential of women's basketball.

WNBA stars have been vocal about improved pay, better travel conditions and more marketing opportunities, but they are not asking to be on level pegging with the money earned by the NBA's million-dollar megastars.

They are simply asking for a bigger slice of the pie, with estimates suggesting WNBA players earn about 20 per cent of the league's revenue - compared to about 50 per cent shared by NBA players.

The WNBL is a long way behind the WNBA but the Australian competition is beginning to make strides after unveiling a parental and pregnancy care policy this week.

It comes a year after the WNBL and the Australian Basketballers' Association agreed on their first minimum conditions agreement.

Nurse has wasted no time in settling into the WNBL after claiming the league's player of the month award on the same day Capitals mentor Paul Goriss was named coach of the month.

The 22-year-old Canadian has averaged 20.25 points and 5.75 rebounds per game but she is adamant the best is yet to come given she is only shooting at 37 per cent from the field.

"I have a pretty good mindset when it comes to moving around to different leagues and understanding that the hoop is the same size and the same height, and the ball is the same… well actually the ball is a lot lighter than most balls I’ve played with," Nurse said.

"The premise of the game is the same and for me to be on a team like this, which is so welcoming and also understanding and helping me become a better player and better person in the league every day.

"I’m a very critical person of my own game, and obviously my shooting percentage is not that great. I know there is a lot more in me and a lot more consistency that needs to come out of my games each and every night.

"If my shot is not falling one night, I’ve tried to do something different, whether that be rebounding or creating plays or playing good defence."

Goriss says his coach of the month gong will mean little in the context of the season with his eyes firmly locked on ending Canberra's title drought.

"It’s recognition I’ve got good players, recognition I’ve been able to recruit good players that are making me look good as a coach," Goriss said.

"We’ve got a great group, we’ve got great team chemistry, it’s nice as a coaching staff and a reward for all of our other staff that put in work to get the results we want and we needed to get to change this program around."
