They've taken over Canberra's Australian Ice Hockey League team, the Brave, to set up the ACT's first multi-sport franchise.

It means the Cavalry administration will now be a 12-month operation, with the AIHL and ABL seasons complementing each other.

The Cavalry's model is common in the USA, with New Orleans' NFL team in charge of their NBA team as well.

Adelaide's AFL team also have a similar model - the Crows own ABL team Adelaide Bite.

The move should lead to reduced costs through one adminstration overseeing both teams.

It will be a staged transition, with the Cavalry taking over the management immediately, but not officially becoming owners until later in the year.

"We're going to have meetings with the Adelaide Crows to find out how they've done amalgamation of the two. What are the benefits? What are the pitfalls?" McMichael said.

"I think this may well be the future of sport.

"You've also got the [GWS] Giants and netball. We're looking at a women's team in the ACT for baseball and I think that will go ahead.

"Those economies of scales are dictating that teams have to look at how to cut their costs or increase their revenue."

The Cavalry will also look to meet with the owners of the Phillip Ice Skating Centre to discuss their ongoing relationship.

But McMichael was also hopeful a new rink was still in the pipeline.

"The ACT government are looking for someone to partner with in the development of a new rink," he said.

"We're hoping that would go ahead ... [but that could be] four or five years away."

The Cavalry became a privately-owned ABL team last year using a community ownership model.

They've swooped on the Brave at the perfect time, having won the AIHL for the first time last year.

Brave co-founder Jamie Wilson, who helped continue Canberra's presence in the AIHL following the demise of the Knights in 2014, said the move would take them to a new level.

The Brave's recruitment is well under way for the upcoming season, which begins April 21.

They've already signed Andy Camenzind, who's played in Switzerland, and they're expecting big things from him this year.

While they're still finalising their imports, Wilson said they were looking to bring in an even stronger batch than the ones who helped them to last year's championship - potentially including a former NHL player.

Wilson said the Cavalry and Brave coming together came about after he studied the Toronto Maple Leafs' ownership of the the Raptors.

"It's huge because the more you professionalise your club  and the more resources you have the more people want to come," he said.

"Five years ago we could not get players to play in Canberra. Now we're the preferred choice for anyone coming to this league and locals are knocking on the door.

"You put the resources of the Cavalry front and centre and the professionalism that these guys bring and that's only going to grow even more."
