Gilkes and the ACT/NSW Country Comets are gearing up for another road trip to face South Australia at Karen Rolton Oval beginning on Monday.
It is former Western District-UC star Matt Gilkes' next step towards a domestic contract, having enjoyed a breakout season for the Comets this year.
Playing cricket on the weekend and backing up for representative duties during the week sure beats a normal day job for Gilkes and a host of emerging Canberra products in the squad.
It marks the Comets' final clash before the four-day competition goes on hold for the first edition of the Futures League's Twenty20 component in late January.
The Comets are desperate to return to the winners list having slumped to their first defeat of the season with an agonising 18-run loss to Victoria at the Junction Oval last week.
Chasing 414 to win in the fourth innings, Henry Hunt scored a spirited 98 but it wasn't enough as the Comets folded for 396 - a remarkable chase nonetheless to add to a memorable clash featuring Tom Engelbrecht's 5-14 in the first innings.
