Things began to change when she helped the Sydney Sixers win the Women's Big Bash League. Now she is on the cusp of delivering an historic WNCL title to the ACT Meteors.

The Meteors rose to second on the ladder on the back of Burns' five-wicket haul in a 33-run win over the Western Fury at Manuka Oval on Sunday.

But the all-rounder's heroics (5-36) weren't enough to stop the ACT from falling agonisingly short of a bonus point that would have proven crucial in the midst of a five-team scramble for a spot in the decider.

The ACT will have it all to play for against the NSW Breakers and South Australia in the final round of the regular season in February.

Burns laughs she will be taking plenty of mental notes when she links up with a host of NSW players in the Sixers squad this week for the WBBL, but for now she just wants to savour a clean sweep on home turf.

She has well and truly earned it - Burns is just the third Meteor to claim five wickets in a match after Kris Britt and Hayley Jensen, and the milestone even took her by surprise.

"I actually didn’t really realise it was the fifth until someone mentioned it when I was out there," Burns said.

"I was just trying to take it one over at a time, but it awesome. I’m not sure I’ve got a five-for in the WNCL before so it was great to get out there and just try and help the team get over the line in the end.

"At the moment all the girls are just really happy with how this weekend has gone obviously after such a big break since September. We’ll sit back, enjoy the rest of the week before Big Bash starts and then come back into things come February."

The Meteors fired early on their way to a third straight win, as Claire Koski posted her second half-century in three days with a classy 82 (105) before Angela Reakes seized control with a stellar 76 (83).

But Koski and Reakes were left wanting from their teammates - Katie Mack's 22 was the next best as the hosts were rolled for 253.

The Fury were cruising at the halfway point of the innings but things went south when Burns had opening batter Bhavi Devchand caught behind for 57.

The 30-year-old soon ripped through the Fury's top order before a seventh-wicket stand between Piepa Cleary and Kate Cross gave the visitors a ray of hope - a glimmer quickly snuffed out by Maitlan Brown's late raid (3-40) as the competition grinds to a halt.

"It’s a pretty busy period but most of the girls just try to use the game time we get throughout the Big Bash to work on things we can take into our last round [of WNCL]," Burns said.

"I know last year we came out pretty well against Tassie after our Big Bash campaign, so hopefully getting a few more minutes under our belt and game time out in the middle and bowling, we’ll come out bigger and better after Big Bash."

NSW managed to stay in the title hunt with 71-run triumph over Victoria at Blacktown International Sportspark, and they will soon welcome back a group of stars headlined by Alyssa Healy and Ellyse Perry for the final round to revive their chances of a remarkable 20th title in 23 seasons.

Awaiting them will be a Meteors outfit that finally believes they are good enough to win a championship.

Should the ACT halt the Breakers juggernaut, the only side standing in their way will be South Australia, who remain last on the table following a hefty defeat at the hands of Queensland.

Just two games stand between the Meteors and their destiny.
