The Canberra Times revealed gymnastics officials were searching for a new home in July, citing a worn-down and decaying facility as the main reason for shifting its program out of the capital.

Gymnastics Australia chief executive Kitty Chiller confirmed the governing body has been assessing other facilities as she looked to avoid limping into the Tokyo Olympic Games.

But Gymnastics Australia has determined the AIS is the best training facility in the country for the foreseeable future, opting to stay put until after the 2020 Games after building a risk management plan.

"The AIS and Gymnastics Australia acknowledge the AIS Gymnastics Hall is an ageing facility with some structural challenges," Chiller said.

"But we continue to work together to ensure Australian gymnasts have the best preparation possible ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics."

Gymnastics Australia wanted to vacate its 35-year-old building by February or March, but a lack of viable short-term options and the risk of disrupting Olympic preparations has prompted a backflip.

Gymnastics was one of the eight foundation sports on campus when the AIS opened its doors in 1981, but athletes and coaches have been using the same ageing building since 1983.

The sport's looming departure would have further shifted the AIS landscape as the campus redefines itself as a centre of excellence for training camps and research as opposed to an athlete hub.

The AIS and Australian Sports Commission will continue to fund the sport, having given $3.2 million to Gymnastics Australia, despite being a relatively small player in international gymnastics.

Gymnastics will continue to base a men’s artistic gymnastics residential program at the campus, while the governing body will continue to host national training camps for women’s artistic, rhythmic and trampoline for national senior, junior and team future advanced squads.
