Canberra’s ACT Speedway is set to switch on its lights in the 2018-19 season when they host the first night race meeting in over two decades in a trial for future night racing in the capital.

Speedway racing has been a day-time affair throughout the ACT since the closure of Canberra's Fraser Park speedway in 1997, at odds with the majority of tracks in the nation.
The National Capital Motorsports Club has gained approval from the ACT government to run a one-off event on September 22, where noise from the venue under night racing conditions will be evaluates.
Officials hope it will lay the foundations for permanent change on the Canberra speedway scene having worked tirelessly to get the proposal over the line at the humble Pialligo Avenue track.
ACT Speedway club president Danny Hodak says night racing could revolutionise the sport in Canberra and open the door for a whole new market to get a taste of the sport.
"This trial race meeting is just one step forward in our efforts to make night racing a permanent fixture in the ACT, but it’s certainly a fantastic one towards the future of speedway in the area," Hodak said.
"Night racing would also be a huge step forward in terms of Canberra’s night entertainment scene, offering both locals and visitors a family-friendly activity in the evening.
"Without support from club members and especially fans, night racing will remain a thing of the past in the ACT, so we’re strongly encouraging people to come along to our meeting and show their support."
The program on clay surface is slated to consist of legend cars, production sedans, RSA street stockers and RSA junior sedans, with the club currently in negotiations with a number of other classes.
