That's the view of former jockey turned race analyst John Scorse after Pin Sec cruised to a dominant Black Opal Stakes triumph in a field of seven at Canberra's Thoroughbred Park on Sunday.

Some have been left searching for answers as to how Canberra racing's showpiece event can be bolstered to have a sizeable field fitting of its $300,000 group 3 status, placed two weeks out from the $3.5 million Golden Slipper.

Canberra Racing chief Andrew Clark believes Thoroughbred Park's feature race is perfectly positioned in the autumn carnival as a lead-in to the world's richest race for two-year-olds.

Scorse says the quality of the race remains as strong as ever and dwindling field numbers are a sign of the times.

But if the shoe fits, one answer could be finding more hopefuls from local trainers like Nick Olive, Matt Dale, Keith Dryden and Scott Collings.

"We've got good strength in Canberra," Scorse said.

"The Blues [Godolphin] sent something, Peter Snowden always sends something, usually Anthony Cummings brings something, as do Gai [Waterhouse] and Adrian [Bott].

"If you could get them with one each or a couple of lots of twos, and a couple of ours, then we’ve got a field of 12 at least. Maybe that’s what we lacked.

"I don’t know if there is an answer to this situation, it is what it is. We’ve got this fabulous date, which is 13 days from the Slipper, and we’ve got a field of seven in the Black Opal. But in saying that, they were a good bunch of horses.

"For your big race you want a big field, it deserves a big field. There’s a lot of options, so it’s just how the cards fall. I’m no administrator, but we’ve got good men running our show like Andrew Clark.

"We love it, some of those local horses [on Sunday] were outstanding. Canberra racing is in pretty good shape."

Canberra Racing officials are determined to make it a case of quality over quantity, confident the 1200 metre race will continue to attract some of the best two-year-olds in Australia.

A glance over the winners list will show the quality has been there in spades over the past seven years - Trapeze Artist (2017), Takedown (2015), Criterion (2013) and Epaulette (2012) have all gone on to win group 1 races after saluting in the Black Opal.

Scorse says officials and bookmakers might want more numbers for betting turnover, however he struggles to find many two-year-old races with huge fields outside the Magic Millions.

"[The Black Opal] still was a quality race. We’ve sent them to the Slipper in the past. Criterion, Trapeze Artist, all those nice horses in the past few years that have gone right on," Scorse said.

"Whilst it’s a bit of a worry when you see seven go around, you’ve got to assess that it’s a sign of the times. That’s what it is. I’m not seeing big fields in two-year-old races. You just hope the quality is there.

"Those horses names that I mentioned, that’s what it has brought out, and that’s what people will look at. If they’re going to sit down and say ‘we’ve got a race with seven horses in it, what can we do?’ You say ‘well, look at the horses who are running’.

"You’re not lacking class or quality."
