But the club is preparing for a fight with rich overseas clubs in the coming months with a host of stars to go on the market before their contracts finish after the World Cup next year.

Alaalatoa didn't hesitate committing his long-term future to the Brumbies and Wallabies, agreeing to a four-year extension despite having 12 months left on his existing deal.

He said the chance to chase Super Rugby success with the Brumbies and an opportunity to play at the next two World Cups convinced him to jump when the offer came.

The 24-year-old is the first Brumby to commit to the next five seasons and the club is also keeping an eye on the likes of David Pocock, Scott Sio, Tevita Kuridrani and Sam Carter.

"There's a young squad for the Wallabies and the Brumbies, so to be able to sign for that long is something that makes me excited," Alaalatoa said.

"To know that I'm going to be a part of that, and to perform as best I can to stay in those squads, I'm certainly looking forward to it. The next five years gives me some certainty and removes some doubt, I can put that to bed and concentrate on footy.

"Hopefully those other guys coming off contract re-sign for another year or two to continue to build what we have and push that experience we've got with the amount of young boys we have."

The Brumbies have locked in their squad for the 2019 campaign, recruiting a handful of players to help them push towards a return to the finals and a potential title.

But the World Cup cycle means clubs from France, Ireland, England and Japan will be looking for international recruits and a core group of Brumbies will be on an Australian rugby hit list.

New Brumbies chief executive Phil Thomson started in the role last week and one of his first tasks is working with retention and recruitment manager Chris Tindall to build the future of the club.

The international nature of rugby union means some players will likely move on at the end of next year, which is why the Brumbies have also invested in youth.

Folau Faingaa, Tom Banks and Rob Valetini are in the Wallabies squad for the spring tour of Europe and are only at the start of their Test careers, while recruits Toni Pulu and Tom Wright are moving to Canberra in the coming weeks.

Alaalatoa is regarded as a leader of the future and was a Wallabies vice-captain last year, cementing his place in the regular front-row rotation.

His family and partner live in Sydney, but he says he re-signed with the Brumbies to repay them for giving him a Super Rugby opportunity four years ago.

"I'm truly grateful for the opportunity," Alaalatoa said. "The Brumbies gave me a chance to play Super Rugby and I've enjoyed every minute of every year being there.

"For me it's about leading through your action. There are a lot of experienced boys who are good at talking, like David Pocock and Scotty Sio. For me, if I've got a point I'll raise it but I want to lead with what I do."

Alaalatoa is in Japan with the Wallabies for a camp before the squad moves to Europe for the first Test of the spring tour against Wales on November 11.

The Wallabies have won just three of their past 12 Tests since their clash against Wales in Cardiff in November last year, but Alaalatoa was confident the players were moving in the right direction for World Cup success.

"At the end of the day we need to win games and that's something we're working towards," Alaalatoa said.

"We've got three tough games back to back on the spring tour ... This next year is going to be a big one for all of us. There are a lot of talented tighthead props there, you've got to perform well to be picked and I know I have to do that."
